This building was until very recently the Nat West Bank. Yet another bank closure in Lewes. Cash is a dying commodity.

The society was established in October 1870 and incorporated in 1876. it was known as the Lewes Co-operative Benefit Building Society. The society had been founded by the members of the Lewes Co-operative Industrial and Provident Society (established 1864) and for many years they shared premises at 3-4 West Street. From about 1897 the society had offices at 1 Fisher Street and in 1920 it moved to 11 High Street, the premises formerly occupied by the Lewes Old Dispensary
On 1 July 1970 the society absorbed the Hove and South Coast Building Society and on 1 January 1972 the Pelham Building Society. (from the National Archives)
