-- A few months after turning 18, Kiefer embarked on an "imitation journey," retracing Van Gogh's life as an artist. He started in Van Gogh’s birth country, the Netherlands, and finished in Arles, France, where the artist experienced one of his most prolific periods. Whilst in Arles, Kiefer sought to immerse himself in the landscapes and people that Van Gogh depicted in his characteristically expressive style. The young Kiefer wasn’t so interested in the emotional aspect of Van Gogh’s work, or his unhappy personal life, but in the “rational structure, the confident construction of his paintings”.-- (Source: Royal Academy Website)
